change.gov

I have wandered around change.gov a few times and was not really impressed. I like the idea of such a web site and hope that it is a sign of things to come. Unfortunately, the majority of the content is a collection of public relations moments and press releases. Shockingly, my eyes were drawn toward the education page, specifically this:

Recruit Teachers: Obama and Biden will create new Teacher Service Scholarships that will cover four years of undergraduate or two years of graduate teacher education, including high-quality alternative programs for mid-career recruits in exchange for teaching for at least four years in a high-need field or location.

Sound familiar? I will give the President-elect credit here as he said as much in The Audacity of Hope. By political standards, he wrote that a long time ago. Only time will tell if it will really happen. I don’t want him to reinvent the wheel when there are a decent number of effective programs already available. I don’t just mean ABCTE. There is the now famous Teach for America, The New Teacher Project, New Leaders for New Schools, Core Knowledge, charter schools in general, and many more.
